Dentures

Dentures are helpful in ensuring that the gap left by missing teeth does not have a detrimental impact upon your speech or eating habits. They can also help to “fill out” the face, giving it a more natural appearance. Wearing a denture can be a little daunting, but over the years modern techniques mean that dentures fit more comfortably than they used to, increasing a patients self esteem, as well as enhancing their smile.
Dentures can be full or partial. A full denture is one that replaces all the teeth in your mouth, both upper and lower. A partial denture is one that fills the spaces of your missing teeth. These are not a permanent fixture in the patient’s mouth, and need to be removed each night and cleaned. Provided you treat them correctly, dentures should last for a number of years.
If a denture were to need repair, this is done free of charge on the NHS.

Dental crowns and bridges

A crown (or cap as they are sometimes referred as) can be used to replace the top part of a tooth that has become damaged, or weakened. A crown fits over an existing tooth, provided that the root is still relatively strong, protecting it from further damage and or decay. They can be used to cover discoloured, damaged or injured teeth. If you have an old crown, that you are no longer happy with, it may be possible to replace this.
Crowns can be made out of porcelain, gold or other materials. These are made by one of our dental laboratories and fitted by the dentist to ensure a snug fit. These can often take a couple visits before the final fitting.

A dental bridge is a permanent way to fill a gap where teeth may be missing in the mouth. It contains one or more false teeth, and unlike a denture, is permanently held in the mouth by the teeth next to it. Not all patients are suitable to have a bridge, this is something that can be discussed with your dentist.

Fillings

Fillings are the most common type of restorative treatment. These will replace the part of the tooth that has been lost due to decay and has caused a cavity, (hole) in the tooth, or because part of the tooth has broken. They can help protect a tooth from future damage which left untreated may result in the tooth having to be removed.

Traditionally fillings are silver in colour and made from amalgam. These can sometimes be noticeable for patients when smiling or laughing, so some patients prefer to have white or tooth coloured fillings, these may only be available on a private basis. We advise that you speak to your dentist to discuss your options.
